DAY 1:
The first thing you’ll see as you arrive is Salisbury Cathedral’s spire, the tallest in the country. Standing at a breath-taking 404ft / 123m, it has been guiding travellers to Salisbury city for over 800 years. Drop off is in St John’s Street, a short walk to Salisbury Cathedral.
Salisbury Cathedral is hosting a new modern art exhibition, To Be Free (13 May - 17 Sep), exploring the subject of liberty, a fitting topic for a Cathedral that owns one of only four remaining 1215 Magna Carta in the world. Featuring the work of emerging and internationally acclaimed artists including Yinka Shonibare’s compelling fibreglass sculpture, Justice For All and Cornelia Parker’s Magna Carta (An Embroidery), a 13-metre-long embroidery installation depicting the Magna Carta Wikipedia pages. And then over to the Bell Tower Tea Rooms to enjoy afternoon tea with magnificent views of Salisbury Cathedral.
Grab a blanket or fold out chair and picnic whilst you enjoy a Summer of Music and Theatre in the peaceful gardens at Arundells, former home of the late Prime Minister, Sir Edward Heath. During July and August, you’ll find performances of Twelfth Night, Robin Hood, Jabberwocky, Gilbert and Sullivan Opera and the Wizard of Oz. Or how about joining a unique outdoor walkabout production of Shakespeare’s tale, The Tempest, held in one of Salisbury’s most beloved parks, Churchill Gardens.
There are plenty of great places to stay in Salisbury, one to suit every budget. Choose one steeped in history with outstanding views of either the Cathedral or surrounding countryside. Stay at Sarum College, just steps away from Salisbury Cathedral, some rooms have the most amazing views, The Legacy Rose and Crown, a 13th Century 4-star riverside coaching inn with views of Salisbury Cathedral or Milford Hall Hotel and Spa, a family-owned boutique hotel in a pretty Georgian manor house.
DAY 2:
Salisbury is a city in the countryside. There are many open green spaces, gardens and some spectacular views. Today includes time to explore Queen Elizabeth Gardens, an opportunity to take a great photograph of Salisbury Cathedral, plus time to shop.
Visit Queen Elizabeth Gardens, opened in the 1960s to commemorate our late Queen’s Coronation, perfect for a gentle stroll by the River Avon, or if you’re looking for a great vantage point to take that memorable photograph, either head along the Town Path for the Constable Walk, where you’ll be rewarded with the famous view of the Cathedral Constable painted or perhaps enjoy a punt on the River Avon and let yourself drift down the river and see the beautiful historic city of Salisbury from the water.
In Salisbury, we celebrate the unique and the quirky, the local and the original. Salisbury is a shopper’s paradise, unlike any other high street where you’ll be sure to find something unusual. Visit Salisbury on a Tuesday or Saturday and you can experience the Charter Market located in the marketplace, near the Guildhall. One of the oldest markets in Britain, Salisbury has hosted a weekly market since 1227. Today you will find a vibrant, friendly market packed with fresh, local artisan produce and unique products – perfect for something to eat now or a gift to take home.
It’s time to head back to St John’s Street to meet your coach and bring your tour to an end. Experience more of Salisbury’s originality and charm throughout the year, with a great range of festivals and events to delight you. Join us in November and December when our medieval streets, markets and shops burst with festive merriment and sparkling decorations.
If you have time, why not enjoy an afternoon or evening at Salisbury Racecourse. There are race days throughout the summer months, some with live music.
