Salisbury Market Place is the heart of the city, and has been for hundreds of years. Surrounded on two sides by shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes, it is easy to sit back in one of the outside venues and soak up the historic surroundings. Whether by day or night there is always a friendly welcome.
The area really comes to life each Tuesday and Saturday when the historic Charter Market takes place. The market has run here since 1227 and is one of the oldest in Britain. Approximately 70 stalls of various sizes take part with the aromas of freshly ground coffee, bread, newly cut flowers and hog roast some some of those to entice visitors and shoppers! The wide range on offer also includes jewellery, watches, ice-cream, fresh vegetables and fruit, clothes, shoes, homeware, pet food and linen – plus a lot more.
Each market also has a dedicated farmer’s market area which can be recognised by the blue/white stalls. The Charter Market runs every Tuesday and Saturday. Tuesdays it is open from 8am until 3.30pm and Saturday from 8am until 4pm.
There is only one Tuesday when the market can’t occupy the Market Place and that’s the third Tuesday in October when the Charter Fair rolls into town. It is well worth a visit to see the area lit up and full of excited faces of thrill seekers.
