Salisbury's not to miss summer events
Salisbury is a city brimming with imagination and originality and you can see that through the eclectic range of events on offer this summer.
Whether you want live music, child friendly shows or an evening of laughter, we have it.
Here are the events going on across Salisbury this summer to watch out for:
For the kids
We all think we know the tale of Beauty and the Beast – but do we really?! Here the classic tale is brought to life by comedy duo, Living Spit. The award-nominated act brings this brand-new, monstrously-musical, Disney-defying version of this classic French tale about what it means to be truly beautiful in the 18th century to Salisbury Playhouse. 18th June.
The StongWomen are back to show just how fun science really can be.
If you have ever wondered how you balance a chair on your chin, if you can juggle liquid, or how circus performers eat fire – this is the show for you. StrongWomen Aoife and Maria reveal the scientific secrets behind their astounding tricks, using jugglers, acrobats and hula hoop artists to reveal how science is used to create their amazing acts. Salisbury Playhouse, 26th June.
Daisy is a little bit messy, so when she has to look after the school’s hamster for a weekend it leads to many adventures and her best weekend ever! Zoo Co present this magical and visual story complete with original music, puppets, tap dancing and even a trip to the moon!
Messy is performed by a Deaf and hearing cast with Sign Supported English, and has been created in partnership with ADHD Foundation. All performances are Relaxed Performances, which means if you need to stand up, sit down, wriggle around, leave or come back in, that’s absolutely fine! Salisbury Playhouse, 3rd July.
David Walliams’ best-selling book, Mr Stink, is a firm favourite amongst children and they will enjoy seeing the character come alive on the stage this summer. Packed with fun, humour and a heart-warming message, this touching tale provides the perfect family entertainment. It’s being held in the garden at Arundells, in the Salisbury Cathedral Close, so remember the picnic, rugs and seats! 22nd July.
Markets
The popular Salisbury Street Sellers returns to the Market Place every second Sunday from 13th June to 12th September. The market is open to anyone, whether an established trader, small home business or a hobbyist making crafts items - it offers a chance to be a ‘suitcase seller’. Stalls range from vintage, artisan, arts and crafts to food and drink. There will also be entertainment to create a vibrant market place.
Comedy
You will find something for the whole family at the first Salisbury Comedy Festival, which is taking place on Hudson’s Field this summer. There’s an amazing line-up of comedians performing throughout the afternoon and evening - from Noise Next Door for the kids, to Frankie Boyle for the adults. There will also be a funfair, inflatable obstacle courses and a range of food and drink providers. Plus, money raised during the day will go to Salisbury Hospital Stars Appeal. 7th August.
Wiltshire Creative’s Comedy Club: Ed Gamble
You might know stand-up comedian Ed Gamble from Mock the Week, Taskmaster or for being the co-creator and co-host of the incredibly successful mega-hit podcast Off Menu with James Acaster. He’ll be in Salisbury this summer, as comedy returns to the Playhouse. 26th June.
Music
Join The Boulevards at Salisbury Playhouse for their Rock & Roll Shakin All Over Party! The 1950s rock and roll band will perform the greatest hits from the golden era of music, from Elvis Presley to Chuck Berry and Cliff Richard to Little Richard. Join them on 2nd July.
Salisbury Live In The Square 2021
The sound of live music will fill Salisbury Market Place as Salisbury Live In The Square returns. The free events will see six local performers/acts take to the stage, with the Deloreons headling. 9th July.
There is nothing better than sitting in a park on a summer's day listening to live music – and you’ll get the chance to do just that twice this year as Music In The Park returns. Sit back, relax and enjoy live music from local performers in the beautiful setting of Queen Elizabeth Gardens and Victoria Park. The Salisbury City Council events take place on 4th July (QEG) and 18th July (Victoria Park).
Ayanna is a talented musician who has been described as “a cellist, songwriter and singer everyone needs to be listening to now”. If you thought classical and alternative R&B music cannot successfully coexist, Ayanna proves it can! Salisbury Playhouse, 10th July.
Those who grew up in the 90s and noughties will feel a pang of nostalgia at the Origin Festival. Simon Webbe, Liberty X, S Club 7, and The Honeyz will all perform for Noughty Nineties on Hudson’s Field. 6th August.
This year’s Farley Music Festival brings together a star-studded line-up of world-class classical musicians. Royal Academy pianist Anjulie Chen, prize winning pianist Francesca Orlando and returnee David Gray are just some of those who will take to the stage in the iconic setting of the All Saints’ Church. From 29th June to 4th July.
Exhibitions
Richard Chopping The Original Bond Artist
007 fans should head to the Cathedral Close this summer. To celebrate the release of the 25th Bond movie, No Time To Die, The Salisbury Museum takes a look at the life and work of writer, illustrator and teacher Richard Chopping, best-known for illustrating the original book covers for James Bond. An exhibition that hopefully won’t leave you shaken or stirred! 17th May to 3rd Oct.
After being diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome in 2015, artist Mahlia Amatina was inspired to share the unique sensory experiences of life on the autistic spectrum through her work. Alternate Perceptions is an exhibition which will be showcasing a collection of Mahlia’s recent works, as well as presenting an art installation created as part of the SHIFT! programme in collaboration with Wiltshire Creative’s group of young artists. At Salisbury Arts Centre, until 3rd July.
(all things) Bright and Beautiful
Fisherton Mill welcomes back local artist, Louise Luton as she showcases her artwork. Louise is known as a wildlife painter and is inspired by the natural world. Not only can you see Louise’s work, but art lovers wanting to know more can watch her at work and ask questions during sessions at the Mill on June 15th. The full exhibition runs until 3rd July.
