Get ready for another packed weekend in Salisbury.
It's full of singing, pumpkins, performances and art - what events do you want to experience this weekend?
Here are some of our top picks for 9th and 10th October 2021.
September in the Rain has proved a huge hit with critics and audiences alike, and this is your last chance to see it if you haven’t yet! John Godber’s moving play has been called “a true masterpiece”... “laugh out loud” …. “pitch perfect”..... There are two performances on Saturday 9th October – the last day of the run - with a limited number of tickets left for both the 2.15pm and 7.30pm shows. Book now so you don’t miss out. Or, if you’d rather watch from the comfort of your own home (and even in your pyjama’s!), the play is being streamed online. Find more details on that here.
It’s going to be a royal weekend at Salisbury Cathedral! A special gala concert is taking place to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the cathedral’s girls' choir, and Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester will be there to help mark the occasion. The concert takes place three decades after the girls' choir sang their first Evensong on October 7 1991, an extraordinary moment not just in the history of the Cathedral but in cathedral music. At the time there were some girls singing in other cathedrals, but Salisbury was the first English Cathedral to admit girls on parity with the boys and to establish an independent foundation to support girl singers. Definitely something to celebrate! There are limited tickets left. Find more information and book here. (Tickets can only be pre-booked until the end of 8th October)
Salisbury Street Sellers returns to the Market Place this weekend, with a Halloween theme. There will be pumpkin carving and painting, and the chance to take some spooky selfies! As well as all this, there will be over 60 stalls and the French Market to enjoy from 10am to 4pm. It is the last Street Sellers event of the year, so make the most of it.
You may not think of Salisbury District Hospital as an art gallery, but it is full of fabulous artwork. Four Seasons is the latest exhibition on the main corridors of the hospital, installed for the enjoyment of patients, visitors and staff. In this newest exhibition artists interpret nature through different artistic methods including paintings, drawing, collage and printmaking. Artists exhibiting are: Robin Moorcroft, Hilary Tratt, Kate Bennett, Joan Scott, Cathy Beggs, Barbara Rousseau, Marianna, Kneller, Ann Squire & Keith Pattison.
If it’s art you’re looking for this weekend there are plenty of other opportunities across Salisbury.
The latest exhibition at Fisherton Mill Gallery is From Mind to Line by The Lemon Timers. It’s the fifth show from the group to be shown at Fisherton Mill. Normally they exhibit the work they produce from life drawing workshops, but whilst they have been bereft of life models during the pandemic, they have drawn upon their great wealth of visual memories to build a body of work captured from the mind to line. The exhibition runs until 30th October.
Why not also drop into the Salisbury Arts Centre to see Makers’ Tale 2021. The exhibition examines craft and making as a highly relevant component of contemporary life. It ends on 30th October.
Or, visit Salisbury’s newest contemporary art gallery, The Vanner Gallery, for their first exhibition. 'CONNECT: people, art and place' focuses on the idea of connection as the world restarts after the Covid pandemic, and people emerge from living constrained and separate lives. Runs until 24th December. You can also read more about the man behind The Vanner Gallery, David Christie, in the Experience Salisbury 5 Questions With blog.
